Purple Day Yesterday

Posted by Lost-Chances - October 22nd, 2010

The purple day; where one should consume The Purple One to prove their love to the homosexual community. Oh, and wear purple stuff. It's all in dedication to suicides in the homosexual community (gay and lesbians only, not sure if it includes bisexuals and pansexuals). You may notice that I've posted this a bit on the late side and that's partially because of how little I care about the event.

For those that know me a bit, I bet the first thing you're asking is "how could you not give a fuck about an event that is designed to raise awareness of suicides among the gay community when you're bisexual yourself?". If you want the short answer, very easily. The longer answer...One major problem with the whole "fight for equality" thing is that while there are some events that I encourage as part of the road to gay people being equal to straight people, there are some that signifies us as a separate community.

When you're dedicating a day to gay people committing suicide (as opposed to making it part of a campaign on a normal anti-suicide day), you're showing the gay community as a unique group. This is good to unite the gay community, give them a sense of belonging and to decrease suicides in the group. However, this doesn't help with discrimination. People, especially from less educational backgrounds, will point and laugh at large and well defined groups they can't be a part of due to some inane reason, especially when the person perceives the group as an elite to their group. Notice how there is a lot of hatred to the upper class? Working class, plus the upper class coming off as superior to the working class, means class-to-class hate (not saying I disagree with it though).

When people are deciding "hey, let's make an event for only the gay community", it's an in-group thing. It's a secret club that those straighties can't join in with. This is amplified when their presumption that they can't get involved is confirmed. Which I personally can't help but find bizarre since they're essentially turning away support just because "it's our special group and straight people may fuck it up". I recently went to a LGBTQ group at my university, which I admit they mean well and had good reasoning, but had already decided to keep at a minimum the amount of straight people in it. The reason was good I will admit, about how some LGBTQ may be in the closet and may not want to be outed by straight people being there, plus it'll put more of a strain during those moments when homophobia occurs. He did mention he would possibly in the future allow some events where straight people may come to, but I can't help but think that if we keep the communities this far apart, I'll be surprised if equality occurs in the next decade or two.

After all, during the women rights movements, there were men protesting as well. During the abolishment of slavery and equality to non-whites, there were white people protesting as well and helping the cause. If homosexuals do not allow themselves to helped and they instead try to put themselves as an elitist group with only homosexuals allowed at their events, nothing will change. Equality occurs when there is no proof at all that either group are better than the other, all it takes is the perception that the LGBTQ community are elitist and that is it and it comes to a stand-still.
